Exchanging Leadership Experience – Students from Ten Universities Joined the Assembly

On November 24th, 2012, students from NTU Leadership Development Program held the “College Students’ Leadership Forum and Interactive Assembly” at global lounge (on the third floor of the Second Students’ Activity Center), inviting nine domestic universities with relevant organizations to make exchanges. What made the event different was that it had combined the issue of human resource crisis in Taiwan, inviting the general manager of Fang-Lue Management Consultation Corporation, Zhi-Yao Lin, along with CEO of NTU Career Center, Madame Su-Yun Wang, to deliver a talk on such topics. In the afternoon, representatives from every school shared their learning plans and leadership experiences. In the end, a tea party allowed students to socialize and converse directly with one another. The assembly had thus initiated opportunities to future cooperation and further development.
Student Leaders Convening 10 Universities
“College Students’ Leadership Forum and Interactive Assembly” originated from “Seminar of Leadership Development in University” convened by NTU LDP in 2011, in which participants comprised mostly lecturers and school staff. This year, LDP strived to make changes, resetting students as the core of the event as well as allowing its students to organize and plan this year’s event.
Hence, with the advocacy and guide by Su, Ting-Rui (LDP Cycle 4), LDP students, including Cycle 5 freshmen, had formed an ad-hoc group of 15 to work on all kinds of preparations.
The aim of the exchange assembly is to invite even more school organizations related to leadership, leading them to know each other, have chances to cooperate afterwards, and open up opportunities to further development with such an event. In addition to students from NTU Leadership Development Program, participating students also came from the Justice Consumption Alliance (Fu Jen University), New Age Leader Cultivation Project Society (Yuan-Ze University), Leader Cultivation Program (Chiao-Tung University), Leadership Power Center (National Cheng-Kung University), Leadership Knowledge and Capability / Service Learning Center (Feng-Chia University), Experimental Bo-Ya Program (National Cheng-Chi University), Experimental Tsing-Hua Program (National Tsing-Hua University), Experimental Bo-Ya Program (Tunghai University), Bauhinia Program (National Chung Cheng University), ten institutions in total. On the spot, professor Chang-Zhen Wu from National Cheng-Kung University and professor Heng-Chia Hsu from Tunghai University took part in the event as well.
The Focus of the Event: “Sharing” the Core
“What on earth is leadership? How can leadership be exchanged? Why should we exchange leadership?” During the preparatory process, the NTU working team had constantly asked themselves the three questions in order to find out the core value of this activity. In Taiwan, many schools, clubs, and foundations have opened courses related to leadership; in other words, many students are actively learning leadership, which is so exciting! And students asked themselves, “Do you want to know how others learn leadership? Do you want to know what others have done in the process of learning leadership? Do you want to know what is in the mind of those people at an age like you, learning leadership yet with different backgrounds? ” Therefore, “Sharing” has gradually become the core value of this exchange event.
In order to carry out “Sharing”, the working team divided the event into three major parts: the sharing between society and students, the sharing between schools, and the sharing between students from different schools.
Between Society & Students: A Probe into the Issue of Human Resources
On the morning of this event, hosted by director of NTU LDP, Xue-Liang Wu, a salon forum focusing on “The Problem of Taiwan Human Resource and Future Developmental Tendency of the Youth” went on with Zhi-Yao Lin, General Manager of Fang-Lue Management Consultation Company Limited, and Su-Yun Wang, CEO of NTU Career Center. In the beginning of the forum, director Wu broke the ice straightaway, inviting the two scholars to make their definitions of “human resource.” Wang explained with the research of Dr. Hanada Mitsuyo from Japan, which marks capability and willingness as the x-axis and the y-axis, respectively, and classifies human resources into four quadrants. Type A: strong capability and strong willingness; Type B: weak capability and strong willingness; Type C: weak capability and weak willingness; Type D: strong capability and weak willingness. This illustrates one’s capability and willingness decide which kind of human resources you are. Besides identifying with it, General Manager Lin also stated, “Those who can understand their own values, and exert their capability and willingness to maximum will be qualified as good human resources!” Subsequently, host Wu mentioned the problem of Taiwanese students’ competitiveness on the international arena; he shared his recent observation of distinguished Mainland Chinese youths who commonly possess three qualities: being active, having opinions (ideas of their own) toward everything, and clear bilingual communication capability. General Manager Lin indicated that Taiwanese youths are comparatively less active, lacking their independent opinions toward issues. He appealed to everyone that Taiwanese students must strengthen this part in order to become a distinguished leader. Faced with such a topic, Wang encouraged everyone that Taiwanese students have unique advantages with Taiwanese historical and cultural background. She reminded us neither to look down upon ourselves nor to limit our potential; instead, we should learn to promote ourselves and bravely reach out for our own battlefield. Before the forum drew to an end, Wang in the long run reminded us that during the phase as students, we should actively cultivate our own “soft power,” with a view to boosting our competitiveness.
Between Schools : A Talk on the Experiences of Every School
The “Sharing of Leadership Learning Experiences between Schools” in the afternoon was one major focus of the exchange event. NTU LDP students, Ting-Rui Su and Si-Han Li started the sharing with “The Morningers” and “The Soap Project of Shen-Keng Community” initiated by NTU Leadership Development Program. The Justice Consumption Alliance from Fu Jen University cared about the issue of consumption justice and promoted the vision of social enterprise to everyone. The New Age Leader Cultivation Project Society have organized the international volunteer activity, carrying out the “Together with Nepal Project” since 2008, in order to learn team cooperation and leadership capability. Xin-Ling Ke from Yuan-Ze University expressed directly and precisely that the so-called leadership is non-stop cross-over learning. Heng-Wei Qiu from Leadership Center (National Cheng Kung University) raised the concept of combing video creation and leadership practices. In his opinion, the director of a film is like a leader. Leading the crew (team) to accomplish video production requires coordination (public relation capability) with scenes or shops; ensuring that during the process everyone does the right thing at the right time (leadership and management); dealing with every kind of trifles in the filming process (crisis management and preparations in advance); discussing with the screenwriter and the photographer about how to film it (communication capability), etc. Therefore, they organized a students’ independent producing team, and learned leadership with the process of filming. Students from Leader Cultivation Program (Chiao Tung University), Leadership Knowledge and Capability / Service Learning Center (Feng-Chia University), Experimental Bo-Ya Program (National Cheng-Chi University), and Experimental Tsing-Hua Program (National Tsing-Hua University) introduced their own course arrangements and design concepts. Among them, students from Cheng-Chi University and Tsing-Hua University unanimously put an emphasis on dorm learning, which has not yet been experienced by NTU Leadership Development Program. At last, students from the Experimental Bo-Ya Program (Tunghai University) introduced their course designs and shared the student-initiated “Ride Ten Thousand Miles and Raise Ten Thousand Books” activity, in which they raise second-handed books for elementary school kids in remote countryside by riding bicycles to go around Taiwan.
Between Students : Opinion Exchange and Communication
In the final phase of the exchange event, all students adjusted the site into a relaxing and pleasant environment, allowing representatives from every school to talk freely, further exchange ideas and share. The talking scene on that day was quite lively, with students’ clamorous discussion everywhere, and all students on the spot treasured this rare chance very much. They exchanged their name cards, shared selflessly what they have undergone, their opinions about leadership, how will they boost their leadership capability in the future, and made appointments about future cooperation.
Making Appointments In The Future and Marking a Milestone
This time, NTU Leadership Development Program has successfully held the Leadership Development Exchange Event with ten universities from all over the island co-joined. Lecturers and students of leadership program along with leadership related university sections were curious about each other, full of questions, but also created many sparks. During the course of exchange, there were the joy of meeting people with similar philosophy of life, and the surprise of encountering different people and things. For example, the 5th cycle student of NTU LDP, Fan-Gan Hsu, who is also leader of NTU Extraordinary Club, cannot wait to exchange name cards with students from Fu Jen University on hearing their concept of promoting social enterprise, just because their ideas are exactly the same!
In addition, representatives from all schools made positive comments on the exchange event, even part of the students were asking whether we would continue to hold similar inter-school leadership exchange events. Hence, Students from NTU LDP planned to create a leadership exchange platform, allowing leadership related programs and clubs from all over the island to benefit from each other, or to further recruit partners, contributing to more chances of inter-school cooperation. The prospect is that students may be able to form a national youth leadership organization run by everyone, and turn such a leadership development exchange event into a convention, or plan leadership learning activities.
